Are you tired of dealing with dry, flaky skin? You're not alone. Skin hydration is a common concern for many (myself included). But with so much information floating around nowadays, it may be hard to discern whcih tidbits are helpful vs. harmful. Below, we’ll go over 5 common practices that may actually be keeping you from hydrated skin. With the right knowledge, you can transform your skin from parched to plump.
5 Common Mistakes to Avoid for Hydrated Skin
Over-exfoliating: While exfoliation is important for sloughing off the dead cells on your skin’s surface, doing it too often can damage your skin barrier, making it easier for moisture to escape. Try starting with 1-2 times per week, and increasing the frequency only if your skin can tolerate it.
Using products with alcohols or fragrances: Alcohols are common in gredients in skincare products, and it’s hard to resist products that smell nice. However, these ingredients can actually irritate and dehydrate your skin over time.
Skipping moisturizer on oily skin: It may seem counterintuitive, but even oily skin needs hydration. A moisturizer is still helpful as an occlusive to help seal in moisture and support the skin barrier. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to avoid excessive greasiness or acne.
Not adjusting your skincare products for the season: Though it may be tempting to use your favorite moisturizer year-round, your skin may react differently to changing environmental conditions, ex. your skin tends to dry out more quickly in cold weather. So if you’re not adjusting your skincare products based on how your skin responds to the environment, you could be doing your skin a disservice.
Using too many active ingredients: While ingredients like retinoids and acids are beneficial for maintaining smooth and even skin, they can be drying. Using too many of these actives at once can end up weakening your skin barrier, making it easier for moisture to escape. If you are using several actives at once, try balancing them out with hydrating, nourishing products.
Tackling dehydrated skin and achieving / maintaining hydrated skin is definitely a process. But armed with the proper knowledge, you can be on your way to healthier, dewier skin.
Stay hydrated out there! 💧
